Don't flick that cigarette out the window

12-28-07 ALMONT, Mich. -The Flint Journal- A tossed cigarette landed two men in the Lapeer County jail for Christmas.
Patricia Moore and her family were driving through Almont from a holiday dinner in St. Clair Shores on Sunday when a police officer pulled them over to ask who threw a cigarette out the window.
After no one owned up, Moore tells The Flint Journal the officer ordered her daughter to get out of the car after discovering she didn't have proof of insurance. Alvin Moore told her to stay put.

Patricia Moore says overzealous police are punishing her husband and son-in-law James Dunsmore -- who flicked the cigarette -- for exercising constitutional rights. Police say they were uncooperative.

Police reports submitted to the Lapeer County Prosecutor's office claim the men were uncooperative, belligerent and that one of the men locked the door and nearly closed a car window on a police officer's fingers.

They're jailed on charges of resisting and obstructing police.

No More Smoky French Cafes

[BBC]French cafes set to ban smoking
France is transforming the image of traditional smoke-filled cafes
France is poised to extend its smoking ban to bars, cafes, restaurants and discos, but the measure will not be enforced fully until 2 January.
The health ministry said smokers would be allowed a 24-hour "grace" period for the New Year festivities.
The ban, which will also cover casinos and hotels, comes on top of a partial ban on smoking in public places that took effect in February.
Similar bans are already in place in Britain, Ireland, Italy and Spain.
The French health ministry said the wider ban, due to take effect on 1 January, would not be monitored strictly during the New Year festivities, in a gesture of "tolerance".
Any smoker caught flouting the ban thereafter faces a 450-euro (£332; $662) fine, while those who turn a blind eye to smokers on their premises can be fined up to 750 euros.
France has about 13.5 million smokers among its population of 60.7 million.
In February smoking became outlawed in French airports, railway stations, hospitals, schools, shops and offices.
The new ban is seen as a big cultural shift for France, where smoky cafes have long been the haunts of famous artists and philosophers. The ban does not include pavement tables or open-air terraces.
In 2004, Ireland became the first European country to introduce a comprehensive smoking ban in all workplaces, including pubs and restaurants.

Last Chantix pill

Well I had my last Chantix pill yesterday, we will see what happens. i was using it for 5 months. I feel very good about being smoke free! I see with eyes from a 3 month perspective of not smoking. I can understand the drugs[ tobacco, nicotine whatever else is in there] could convince you to keep using it. I still get some cravings but they go away fast as I am easily distracted.

Cigarettes for Christmas.

It was very common for celebrities then as well as now to be puffing on a cigarette. I bet they get paid a lot more now. As well as 'product placement' in the movies.
Here we have Ronald Reagan promoting his new movie "Hong Kong" and convincing me to send my friends Chesterfield cigarettes for Christmas. In the beautiful Christmas-card carton.

Restaurateur Introduces Smoking Hole

This is a wild solution if not a original idea to avoid freedom from smoke area. I would guess the owner must be a smoker also to go through this trouble. This was done at a German restaurant. He has made three holes in the wall of his restaurant so that customers can smoke "outside."With the "smoking point," as you can see, customers put their heads through the large hole in the middle and one hand through each of the two smaller side-holes. The patrons can then legally enjoy a cigarette without having to leave the comfort of the inn avoiding breaking the smoking ban
It must get cold in the winter and I don't know if I would want to bend over like that , not knowing who is behind me.

Money-Money Your Money and Your Life

God I really love the American medical industry ! I mean it's the best in the world, if you ask our congressmen (if you have their plan). For those of us that what I call of the lower middle class. Not poor enough for free medical insurance. But have to spend huge amounts of our income for health insurance.
O.K. smoking is bad ! After spending a half a century of the money people trying to get Americans hooked on the addiction, now the smart money is made on how to get us off the nicotine. The game is money who gets your money.
The for profit insurance companies, a CEO in Mn, had to give back a few hundred milliion dollars in stock options, but he still walks away with over $800 million.
The Drug companies that have taken over the airwaves with commercials that the tobacco industry used to fill with cigarette ads.
The for profit hospital Corps. that are building Cathedrals to show their wealth by charging $25 for a mucus removal system ( Kleenex )
Not for profit Insurance ?
Today I went in to buy the last box of my prescription of Chantix. Doc had said I want you on this for six months. I read literature on the 6 months being the recommended time. I am waiting for it to be filled, I hear the clerk talking to someone on the phone, apparently Medica , feels that the date when the prescription was made was day one. I waited until, I had one week of pills left. They will not honor my doctors prescription now for the 6th month because it will be over the 6 month time frame. I should have gone in last week. of course I can still buy it full price, but that $1400 plus a month for insurance for me and my wife won't cover it.

Smoking Mothers Lead to Fat Children

A story at rawstory.com said a report from Japan said. Smoking mothers lead to fat children:
Children whose mothers smoked even in early stages of pregnancy are at nearly three times greater risk of obesity later in life, according to a Japanese study.
While researchers do not know the exact correlation, it is possible that the children whose mothers smoked were deprived of nutrition in the womb, the study said.
Well that will solve the American children obesity probem. Women, another good reason to get free of cigarettes.

Really dying for that cigarette

This story is supposed to be confirmed as true. I can believe it could happen.
Confirmed True by Darwin (17 June 2003, United Kingdom) The National Express bus service between Aberdeen and London takes approximately twelve hours, with NO SMOKING on the coach. A 43-year-old woman was riding south from Glasgow, and as the miles rolled by, she became more and more desperate for a cigarette. It's a long trip for addicts.

The coach stopped at Carlisle--at last, she could satisfy her craving! But no, she was not allowed off the coach. She sat in her seat, becoming more agitated by the mile. She was craving a cigarette. She was fuming.

Fellow passengers said she became increasingly anxious as the journey continued, and started shouting that she wanted off. However, the coach was on a motorway at the time. It was not permitted to stop, save for emergencies.

Somewhere between Shap and Penrith, passengers saw the woman push against the passenger door in the middle of the lower deck. She couldn't be trying to get off to smoke, could she?

Oh, yes she could!
Police concluded that the coach was traveling approximately sixty miles per hour. Our involuntary non-smoker was crushed beneath its wheels. At that point, the coach did make that hoped-for emergency stop, but life is not fair. Unlike a condemned man, our heroine never did get that last cigarette.

Kind of help she needs to quit smoking

Now how is this lady supposed to get free of smoking. The kind of help she needs to quit smoking is to surround herself with modern men, you know the kind that believe women can open their own doors, fix their own cars, plumbing, build a deck or whatever around the house. Maybe then just then people would leave her alone and she could quit.

4788 Cigarettes and Counting

I have not smoked 4788 cigarettes since my quit and saved $1017 in money I would have spent on cigarettes. That is 24 cartons The video below is showing the process of extracting Tar from 400 cigarettes. Think about it thats 2 cartons, 20 packs,. Each cigarette contains 18 mgr, so in the end this guy extracted 7200 mgr of these highly toxic chemicals found in these cigarettes. I have missed out on 86,184 mgr of tar. DARN !

SecondHand Smoke Humor

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a jar of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a jar of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a jar of sperm.
The fourth worm was put into a jar of soil.
After one day: The first worm-dead. Second worm-dead. Third worm-dead. Fourth worm-alive.

Lesson: As long as you drink, smoke and have sex, you won't get worms!

No Tobacco Money No Support

It seems the tobacco lobby must not be spending enough money on congress The industry. from apnews The tobacco industry gave $3.5 million to federal campaigns and candidates in the 2006 election cycle, ranking 64th among major industry groups, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Ten years earlier, it gave $10.5 million, ranking 26th.
So what is happening, congress is taking new whacks at the cigarette industry, banning tobacco sales in Senate buildings. The Senate Rules Committee recently ordered shops in the Capitol and all Senate office buildings to end cigarette sales by Jan. 1.
Cigarettes are still sold in the Longworth House Office Building. But last January, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., banned smoking in the ornate Speaker's Lobby, just off the House floor. Several key lawmakers said they have had no recent contacts with tobacco lobbyists. Maybe I'm just getting more cynical about congressmen-

High School Lockdown In Drug Search

St. Cloud police on Friday used dogs to search a city high school for drugs for the first time. Four dogs searched about 1,500 lockers at Apollo High School while the school was in a lockdown drill. The 1,300 students were not told by the school about the dog searches. Parents were sent an e-mail saying a search would be done in November. Dogs from St. Cloud, Waite Park and Sauk Rapids police departments and Sherburne County sheriff’s department took part in the search. About 12 officers were in the school. The end results they found nothing other than 1 pack of cigarettes and lighters in one locker. I think that it's coolthat they didn't find any other drugs the fact that they only found the one pack of cigarettes, says a lot about their school policy and maybe even about the number of students that don't smoke, they should be happy with the result.

Babies and First Amendment Speech

Ahh, the good old days, I remember when tobacco companies used the 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech argument for advertising.

Then we have jokes.

The bus driver announces that smoking is prohibited and punishable by a fine of several hundred dollars.
Suddenly, a baby starts crying.
"Come on kid," the bus driver said "you're only 6 months old, you can make it without a cigarette."

The Oral Fixation

A lot of the removing ourself from the drug nicotine seems to involve a strong oral fixation. I started out with those white mint lifesavers. That lasted for a short while as I sucked on so many that my throat got raw. I also tried jolly rogers, ich, too much sugar, so I bought sugarless mints of different flavors and ricola cough drops. Looking for more natural things, carrots didn't do it. I have lately been using dried apricots and dried prunes. I also have been chewing on sticks, toothpicks didn't last a minute to thin so I found some chopsticks in a drawer and broke them down in size. I have also experimented with other types of wood, walnut, cherry, oak and even sticks from raspberry bushes. To see if there was a difference. I find I keep going back to the softwoods. Usually when I am using a wood I don't have any mints or such, which is a good thing. I left the house today without a mint or stick even and it was like weird . I wonder what other people use, I'd like to hear some comments on that.

Kid Rock Smoking

I love Kid Rock"s music, I have for some time. I was very impressed with him when he was on Larry King not to long ago. He talked about maturing and was very calm. Later that nite I understand he and some members of his band had a little problem in a restaurant after a show. Why am I talking about him here on my quit smoking blog? Because I found out he has quit smoking because it was affecting his voice and his friend Hank Williams Jr. encouraged him to quit. Good for you Kid ! if you want to hear more quit smoking . New Study on Smoking and Psoriasis

More bad news for current and past smokers, a article in BBC News says Smokers have a higher risk of developing psoriasis, a study suggests. US researchers found that heavier smokers have a greater risk of the skin condition and this only falls back to normal 20 years after quitting. The study of 79,000 nurses published in the American Journal of Medicine also found that people with psoriasis who smoke had more severe disease. It is thought that toxins in cigarette smoke may affect parts of the immune system associated with psoriasis.

Smoking Relapse

O.K. it's been about 2 months since I quit smoking. I am sure chantix has helped me a lot so far. I have 2 and 1/2 half months to go for the 6 month period. I still get urges but none that have been uncontrollable like when I have quit previously. I have been thinking about the next step. When I am done with the pills. I came across this site on relapse prevention called Stepping Stone, they are about relapse in alcoholism and drugs. But relapse is relapse and one can pick up good ideas from it.

Smoking Humor

Yes, smoking is bad for you. It is part part of our culture so tthere are aspects that can be humorous.
Two old ladies were outside their nursing home, having a smoke when it started to rain. One of the ladies pulled out a condom, cut off the end, put it over her cigarette and continued smoking.

Lady 1: What's that?
Lady 2: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet.
Lady 1: Where did you get it?
Lady 2: You can get them at any drugstore.

The next day ... Lady 1 hobbles herself into the local drugstore and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The guy looks at her kind of strangely (she is, after all, over 80 years of age), but politely asks what brand she prefers.

Lady 1: It doesn't matter as long as it fits a Camel.
Got any jokes that relate to smoking or quiting smoking ?

Smokers and Sellers

A very good article by Ailene Sankur that speaks about the intimate relationship one builds with the seller of tobacco how it is similar to to where the alcoholic gets their booze.

Here is a quote "Like any addiction, smoking involves not only a great deal of self-deception, but also a great deal of repetition. Go outside, fumble for a lighter, light up, inhale, exhale, throw the butt in the pile in the planter, go inside, wash your hands, pop in gum, feel less stressed. Do it again. And part of that repetition is seeing someone everyday" Read the whole article at Tencartrain .

I was one of those she referred to as "the most diehard, embattled sort of smoker, the sort with yellowed fingertips and overflowing ashtrays". I went to the same small store to buy my carton every 4-5 days. I wouldn't have to say anything the clerk would just grab a carton. If they were out of full cartons they would refill a open one so I could get the carton price. Now when I go in, after quiting for a month and a half and having saved about $562 in what I would have spent on cigarettes. They ask me how the smoking is going. Which I find a interesting way to phrase it.

Quit Smoking Story

More and more people are getting free of smoking, especially older ones. There are many more stories like mine of older folks finally hitting the bottom of our nicotine cigarette addiction and wanting to live what is the rest of our life maybe a little better. I came across this story of a lady who smoked for 31 years. She talks about how it was back then. About how she smoked all through her pregnancy and even smoked on the maternity ward after her daughters’ birth. She also talks about the process she used when quiting smoking. Read more

Smoking and Bar Accordions

The Irish have had a smoking ban in public places since 2004. According to this report from the Science Buzz Blog They have had time to check on the health of inanimate objects like accordions. Apparently the researchers contacted the repair workers for the instruments in the country. They reported that prior to the ban, they’d get a blast of foul odors when opening up the instruments to do repairs. They also found sooty particles in the tubing and chambers of the instrument. Get enough of that gunk in there, and the tones the instrument was putting out could be affected. Well that makes sense to me as another in the vicinity of cigarette smoke gets a nice coating of the yellow residue.

Timelines of The Smoking Way

Here are some tidbits of information I have come across. Some are from England and some from the United States. Ting them in with my own situation.
1939 First major paper suggesting link between smoking and cancer published in Germany by FH Muller.
1951 First large epidemiological study of link between smoking and cancer, Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill
1958 First health authority smoking withdrawal clinic established, Salford, England. I was 13 and experimenting with cigarettes.
1962 RCP report "Smoking and Health" recommending restrictions on sale of cigarettes and smoking in public places, increased taxation. Tobacco Advisory Committee adopts new voluntary code of practice for cigarette advertising. A junior in high school smoking wastasting good. hooked. I would run out to my car in between classes for a quick smoke. We had a hour off for lunch we would walk across the street from the school and smoke. Nobody would bother us. The high school football coach would cut his cigars in half so he could cup them when seeing students. The sports field was 5 blocks away, always time for a smoke if you walked slow.1964 US Surgeon General's report "Smoking and Health"
Doll and Hill report: "Mortality in relation to smoking: ten years' observation in British doctors", comparing lung cancer incidence for continuing and ceased smokers. Freshman in college. would smoke with friends in the hall. Mother had a heart attack, when visiting her in the hospital to be polite I would stand by the window to smoke.
1965 Cigarette advertising on television banned under powers of 1964 Television Act in Great Britain. Since some of the college teachers could smoke during class we couldn't figure out why we couldn't.
1968
Mom had another heart attack. About this time visitors were made to smoke in the halls of the hospital instead of the room. We thought this was a afront to our rights. there would be 2 or 3 people smoking right outside of a hospital room. Started teaching the principal would be smoking a cigar at his desk after school. I would pull out a ash tray from my desk and smoke. It wasn't until the middle 70's that not directly being told but got the feeling a teacher should not smoke at their desk. This was not a 'habit'
-THIS WAS THE MINDSET OF A DRUG ADDICT-

Extreme Cigarette Quiting Aid

"An Iowa woman who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day became so frustrated with her addiction that she called the sheriff's department last week and asked officers to jail her for several days — just to help her kick the nasty habit." from ABC News
I totally believe she was serious about this. In the past I have though about such a thing myself. I did not go so far as to call the cops to see if they had room but the thought was there as a way to stop. Along with getting out into the wilderness and being stranded for a time. The story referred to her "nasty habit" clearly people do not realize the intensity of the nicotine addiction can be.
There is also a ironic sense to this as people that are addicted to other drugs are put in jail and are trying to get out while some cigarette nicotine smokers are trying to get in for help- in breaking the addiction

Almost Smoking Again

Yesterday I was at a meeting all day. My oral fix was covered by dried apricots and dried cranberries. No problem with craving all day but when I was on the way home. I got a intense wave urge for a cigarette. I mean it caught me off guard. At this point a bunch of slow deep breathing did the job keeping me on track. The slow deep breathing really can help a lot in those situations. The oral fixation is hardest in the morning but a bunch of crackers and coffee work there.

No Smoking 11-3-07

I was doing pretty good today on my nicotine freedom. I was listening to public radio, I don't what show it was, I agreed with what they said that withdrawal from nicotine is as on the same level of drug withdrawal as heroin. Now watching watching "Man With A Golden Arm" is my only connection with heroin.

I knew that Minnesota was not the only state to have a state-wide no smoking ban. Washington D.C, Puerto Rico, and 22 other states also have laws on smoking. One of the weirdest things about the Minnesota law is Smoking is still allowed in casinos and I believe patients in certain hospitals...

The Smoking Ban

I didn't get to a bar today to check out the smoking ban was going but the local pizza shop has their no smoking sign up and in small letters it says, be careful big brother is watching you. A couple people were in there when I was and started talking about the 'health Nazis' I used to talk like that. It's amazing how nicotine can twist your mind. I know I am not going to be like what I see as the raving lunatics. Looking with disdain at those who smoke.
I remember when I had become quit smoking 8 years ago and I was going into the hospital to visit my wife who had breast cancer, how I had felt sorry for the smokers who were standing out in the cold having a cigarette. On thinking about it now it was I'm sure a sense of snobbery or superiority.
Later that day as she was in surgery I went out and bought a pack and the story repeated itself. Now I am 2 months into my quit still using Chantix, there is no easy way to quit smoking. The urges still come but they pass without being intense, I can be misdirected with a Ricola.

Minnesota No Smoking

Tomorrow is the first day of Minnesota going smoke free in all public places. It should be interesting. In some of the bigger cities they have been smoke free in a lot of places already. I think where it is going to be interesting is the small town bars. Where that is the only place people go to relax and get together.

Smoking Drug Withdrawal

For a detailed explanation of this at whyfiles.org These brain slices show levels of the "killjoy" enzyme MAO B in the brains of two people. The non-smoker at the top has plenty of MAO B, but the smoker at bottom has much less -- a sign that something in cigarette smoke is destroying MAO B, allowing the pleasure chemical dopamine to tell the body it likes smoking and wants to continue.
What all this information says is of the 4000 or more chemicals in cigarette smoke there is something else other than nicotine that makes withdrawal even harder and something might be needed to lessen the shock of drug withdrawal. Idefinitely believe that is what is working for me.

Chantix Works on My Head

No nicotine patch since last Wednesday but I am still using the Chantix pill twice a day. So here I am, the habit part of my addiction is broken. I can go to the bathroom with out a cigarette, eat no cigarette after etc.
For those who have never had this addiction it's at least for me and I think a lot of people not a matter of will power but a multiple level addiction. The Chantix works on my head and the nicotine patch the habit and eased the cutting down of the nicotine.
Eliminating the ingestion of the other chemicals one gets when smoking is a bigger thing than many realize. As a user of other delivery systems of getting nicotine. Like the chew, it's is not the same, I found myself having a bandit in my mouth while I was smoking........ I'm working on a post of all the different things I've tried to take care of the oral fix I need.

Final Smoking Days

I had been thinking about my birthday coming up on September 2, making me 62 years old. I've been feeling slower and slower. Usually buying cigarettes a carton at a time. To insure I wouldn't run out. I had been taking Chantix for 2 months and was still smoking. I bought just one pack.
A couple of months ago I had boughten some 'Equate' nicotine transdermal system patches. I got them at Walmart for $25 being $5 cheaper than anywhere else. The Nicoderm brand costing $39 for the same thing. But that is a whole nother post.
Anyway that night I put on a 21mg nicotine patch and had 2 cigarettes, the next day, new patch and that night I had 2 more cigarettes. The next day September 1, my birthday I had 3 cigarettes late at night. I knew this could not go on. So the next day, I did not have any cigarettes. Still on Chantix and a patch. I found myself getting the cold sweats. They would go away. As a couple of days went on. I kept the same patch on for 2 days then 3 days before switching when I would be getting the heavy cold sweats and now tremors. After a week I switched to the 14 mg patch. I did the same pattern, new patch for 2 days then keeping the same patch on for for 2 days. The cold sweats would come back.
On the 17th I put a new patch on, during this process in the middle of the night on three different nights I was awoken with what I call shaking tremors, a uncontrollable twitching. I carry stress on my left side. Thats where the tremors would appear. On the 20th I took that patch off and have been just using the Chantix.
Oh, I had been keeping these patches on by putting masking tape over the patch as I found they did not stick that well. After a day or so.
I'd like to hear how other people have gone through this process.

Getting Started Smoking

Look closely at these. Back when I was a kid in the early 1960's bubble gum and candy branded cigarette packs like these sold for a nickel, anyone could buy a pack of real cigarettes for 24 cents. I wasn't big on the bubble gum ones but I would buy the candy ones.
How did you get started smoking ?

Thinking of Stopping Smoking

Until I get my act together I'll be rambling on about how I quit this time and the past. I've been thinking about quitting smoking again for a long time years and years. The nicotine devil drug always has prevailed. My last quit was about 9 years ago. It was not a pure quit. I had stopped smoking but still used the Bandits. That was for a year. The good thing was I wasn't getting all the extra chemicals provided by the cigarettes. Any way I started in again.

I was a 2 1/2 to 3 pack a day smoker for the last 30 years and 1 pack or more for 20 years before that. When not smoking in the last 10 years I used 'bandits' the little pouches of tobacco used in the mouth like a chew.
This blog is going to relate my smoking life from when I was about 12 years old ' borrowing' unknown to her' Winston cigarettes from my mother to now 50 years later.
September 2-2007 was the first day of my final quit !! of smoking, chewing.
